This notable historic apartment house building sits at the northern tip of Prospect Park West and it’s interior architecture was renovated at the hands of acclaimed design studio Worksted. Our clients came to us in the Summer of 2020 and put their trust fully in us to decorate their first bespoke family home during a time of uncertainty and chaos. Over the course of a year, we thoughtfully designed custom furniture, lighting, and millwork to reflect how they wanted to live and function in this beautiful 3-bedroom apartment with 13’ tall soaring ceilings.
An iron console and gilded table lamp with slender lines mimic the architectural wall mounding and door profiles, and a framed work by Charlie Hewitt of acrylic and paper collage hangs above, which was part of the art scope by Mason Lane, who was tapped by the Client for Art Advisory. On the opposite wall hangs a sculptural bust of graphite and mixed media by Lauren Seiden. A stunning and oversized work by Mila Libman of dry pigments and gloss hangs in the hallway from the foyer to the kitchen. The powder room was painted in Eating Room Red by Farrow & Ball.
The Kitchen architecture was designed by Worksted, and a pendant light from Visual Comfort was added to create a relationship between the tall ceilings and the center marble island. Counter stools were selected without backs to avoid blocking the form of the elevation when seated in the dining and living rooms behind this space while also tucking neatly within the thick marble waterfall perimeters.
The curved millwork passageways are a hallmark of this building’s revised architecture. An iconic Florian Schultz Double Onos 55 Pendant Lamp with Counter Weights floats above a dining table by Sun at Six with a hand-painted mural mounted on board and hung as art sourced by LAVA.
The millwork design and fabrication studio Prospect Woodworks was tapped by LAVA to collaborate on several pieces of custom millwork, including this built-in sideboard. LAVA conceived it as a means to utilize a structural beam that divided the living and dining rooms while providing more storage and entertaining space.
A custom 9’ sofa designed in 3 pieces to fit comfortably through the building’s entrances into the apartment was upholstered in a wool boucle by Holland and Sherry to provide maximum comfort and durability for this new family. The nesting bronze and mirrored glass tables are antique from a Park Avenue apartment, and the triptych above the sofa was a custom-commissioned piece by Joe Henry Baker.
The Master Bedroom features a custom canopy bed designed by LAVA to maximize the great ceiling height and a white wool rug. The 19th-century chaise from LAVA atelier was recovered in cotton velvet by Mark Alexander for Romo with coordinating cotton bullion fringe, and pillows from Zak + Fox and Schumacher. The antique federal nightstands and antique marble column lamps paired with silk pleated shades bring nuance and elegance to the space.
The Nursery concept started with the semi-custom green linen sofa with a touch of blue and then contrasted with the walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s Red Earth to bring energy to the space. A custom-cut wool rug from Stark brought a grounding neutral to counterbalance the saturated hues and a playful scallop shape was echoed in the vintage Murano glass pendant light, pillow fringe and pattern, and wall-mounted bookshelves in the foreground. The vintage oil painting was a gift from Meg that was found in the South of France on her own babymoon.
A vintage Robsjohn-Gibbings desk was selected to bring classic warmth to the Library which was paired with a Chuck Kelton gelatin silver print above, and an American Leather sleeper sofa in cotton velvet adds a secondary function to this room when entertaining out-of-town guests. The custom 13’ tall bookcase was a collaboration from LAVA and Prospect Woodworks and provides closed storage at the base, and a place to display favorite books and objects in the upper portion. The throw blanket is from Thomas O’Brien’s AERO and was found on an accessorizing trip with the clients, and the pillows are in a ZAK + FOX fabric with silk fringe from Samuel & Sons.
